In 2013, Michael Becker and Dr. Don Pardew identified rapidly growing pain points facing travel and other verticals: the inability to rapidly access and understand safety conditions on a localized level. At the same time, growing problems confronting organizations large and small: information overload, and rising risk analytics costs. The solution—leveraging data science, predictive analytics, big data, AI to quantify relative safety surroundings on a hyper-local basis. By initially focusing on the underserved end user experience, it was believed that developing a global safety rating system, similar to the Fahrenheit/Celsius scale, individuals would have the means to immediately assess safety complexions of neighborhoods around the world, to make better informed, instantaneous decisions, take control of their own well-being, while at the same time measuring community progress. For organizations, this translated to reducing costs and time inefficiencies, while increasing granularity, scalability, information relevancy. There was no scaled, localized quantitative system available in the market.
Building the platform, accomplished via manual data harvesting, took years and tens of thousands of man hours. The launch initially started with 3,300 cities, representing every country in the world.
Concurrently, Dan Madden had spent the prior ten years architecting a similar approach to creating “actionable” risk intelligence, or a means to underwrite risks/threats by geo-location in near real time—specifically for the insurance, commercial real estate, and security industries. Recognizing acute synergies between the approaches and unrivaled opportunity to create a global brand built on a Public/Private Partnership model, Michael, Don and Dan partnered to create “The Global Location Safety ExperienceTM”.
The construct of using GPS-enabled safety ratings, delivered through an Engaging end-user experience, to Empower and Inform travelers and community stakeholders alike, has massive implications. Today, GeoSure is the most highly scaled platform in the world for understanding safety—65,000+ locations tracked and analyzed in near real time; 20+ million current data users across the globe; the only Women’s Safety and LGBTQ Safety solutions in existence; multiple means to deliver value at scale; several major brand channel partners; a user base that is growing at geometric rates.
From the start, purpose, impact, supporting tourism economies and helping citizens stay safer were central drivers of our mission. Pandemics, macro instability, macro and micro uncertainty has dramatically accelerated the need for safety awareness, worldwide. Today, GeoSure is the world’s most recognized, scaled, hyper-local safety experience available in the market, trusted by leading global companies with a brand that reaches 100+M, growing exponentially.
In 2023, travel industry visionary, Terry Jones joined GeoSure as Special Strategic Advisor. Terry is one of the most recognized names in the $6 trillion, global ecosystem, founder and former CEO of Travelocity, Chairman of Kayak.com and former CIO at Sabre, Inc. Terry is assisting the management team in growth strategy, AI/LLM capabilities execution, and strategic M&A advisory.
Terry has served on over twenty boards of both startups and public companies and was a special venture partner with General Catalyst Partners.

What is a GeoSafeScore™?
GeoSafeScores provide a rapid understanding of safety conditions as a function of location and time scored on a scale of 1-100. The safety scores indicate a contextual and objective measure of safety by combining psychophysical measures, incidence and prevalence statistics, and conveying relative probability for specific categories of risk.
How are GeoSafeScores determined?
GeoSafeScores™ are derived via cutting-edge data science pipelines and sophisticated algorithms using incidence and prevalence statistics or forecasts from statistical models using country, region, municipality, and neighborhood-level data. Data science, risk modeling, regression analysis, heuristics, and proprietary algorithms derive the relationships between large quantities of macro and micro independent variables, e.g., governance, economic, political, judicial, social, cultural, educational, historical and hundreds of dependent variables, e.g., incidence and prevalence crime and health statistics, economic, security, access to medical care, political corruption, physical characteristics and conditions at location, etc.
Every score takes into account a set of variables that contribute to the safety complexion of a given location. Variables tend to be either stable or dynamic.
Stable variables don’t change often and could come from country-level rules and laws, as well as Built Environment variables such as the number of hospitals within a neighborhood boundary.
Dynamic variables refer to temporal-based events such as conflict events, political instability, GeoSure’s Safety Experience Sharing, sentiment analysis, and other indicators that add a dynamic quality to the scores.
Each of these variables is composed of an extensive network of quantitative and qualitative empirical data sources analyzed through the application of Bayesian statistical network analysis and includes different types of structured, unstructured, crowdsourced, and private data sources.
Why is it important to have a safety scoring standard?
GeoSure has developed a global safety “standard” similar to other standards such as Fahrenheit/Celsius, Michelin for hotel quality, or Experian for credit scores. By developing a relative magnitude ratings system, the standard provides context, understanding, and a universal basis for comparison. A score of 53 in Bogota means the same as a score of 53 in Boston, Brussels, and Beijing.
Why don’t I see a score for a specific location?
GeoSure ensures data integrity by setting standards for the coverage of data and quality of data required before we confidently score a location. If there is no score for a particular area, the available data is likely insufficient.
How often are the scores updated?
GeoSafeScores are continuously updated to reflect the safety conditions of an environment. Certain locations may have a less stable, rapidly changing environment, while others may be more stable with less frequent safety condition changes.
How do I know GeoSure scores aren’t biased?
GeoSure is committed to perpetual movement toward the most unbiased sources, algorithms, and pipelines. GeoSure’s focus on the quality and breadth of sources aims to create scores free from explicit bias. The GeoSafeScores™ take into account variables and sources that aim to reduce and eliminate reporting bias. For example, GeoSure subscribes to the Busy Streets theory of neighborhood well-being and quite intentionally dismisses the Broken Window theory.
We are perpetually searching for fair, quality sources to better improve our scores. One of the ways GeoSure seeks to accomplish this is by leveraging Safety Experience Sharing and/or a user feedback loop (asking “What do you think the score should be at location?”) in order to bridge the gap between local perceptions and data-driven measurements.
What do different scores mean?
